6 Reasons Why Low Water Pressure is a Problem in Your Home

Apr 04, 2022

Do your taps take longer than they used to when filling up buckets and tubs? Is there less pressure in the showerhead, or does it offer weaker drops of water compared to before? The problem could be due to several issues, which we will explore below.

1. Your Water Supplier Is At Fault

It would be best if you always try to ask whether your neighbours are reporting similar issues before assuming that the low water pressure is just within your abode. You can contact the supplier and ask if they are experiencing any problems with their water supply systems.

2. The Main Shut-Off Valve is Partially Open

When the main shutoff valve at home is not fully open, the water supply can be affected in many ways. It is therefore essential to locate this vital part of your water system which is typically located near the perimeter of the house and comes in wheel-shaped, tap shaped or lever-shaped handles. If you don't know where to find these, be sure to ask your Newcastle Plumber.

3. Pressure Regulator Malfunction

Regulators can be added to a home's water supply to protect taps, showers, and other household appliances. However, the device itself can have issues at times. Although a new regulator is frequently required for repair, understanding the types of issues that can arise with it can assist users to reduce the cost of its final failure.

If your regulator fails, you'll see an immediate effect. For instance, you may notice that the water pressure in your sink, toilet, or bathtub tap is inconsistent and difficult to adjust. It's likely that the pressure is either too high or too low. Hence, indicating a malfunction in the pressure regulator.

4. Clogged Pipes

When your pipes are clogged, it can reduce the water pressure. If this happens in an area where you need a strong flow of water for cooking or drinking, calling a plumber is the solution. Attempting to fix things on your own may exacerbate the problem and in most cases, can be illegal in NSW.

5. The Water Metre Valve is Closed

You may not have heard of the water metre valve, but it’s one thing you'll want to take care of if your home is experiencing water pressure problems.

If the problem was discovered after a recent plumbing job, it's likely that the valve was not fully opened after the work was completed. Consequently, someone will have to open it in order to restore normal water pressure.

6. When Pipelines are Shared

Unfortunately, shared pipelines can also be a problem. As the name suggests, these are pipes that supply water to multiple homes. When neighbours use their share for needs like washing dishes or taking showers, it causes less pressure in yours which doesn't allow enough liquid to flow through your pipes.

Eventually, you'll notice some weird sounds coming out of the pipes. But that shouldn’t be a big problem. By the time your neighbours' water supplies are no longer used, the pressure in your home's water supply should at least be optimal.

Apart from the above-mentioned, other reasons why water pressure is low would include faulty fixtures and corroded or leaking pipes.

When To Consider Calling a Plumbing Service:

Your water pressure must be balanced in order to prevent your pipes from bursting or your taps from drying out. The right water pressure can also help keep your pipes and drains running smoothly throughout the year.

The correct water pressure is necessary for use as a tool, for example, when hosing down the patio, but it’s also an expectation - nobody wants to wait till the bathwater is cold by the time it’s finally full! This can also be an issue for slow-filling cisterns on your toilet!
