How to tell if you have a blocked drain

Feb 28, 2022

Most of us will experience blocked drains in Newcastle area at some point during our time here, and it is never a pleasant experience. Time is not on your side when you have a clogged drain in the middle of the night. You may not know what to do if your sink or bathtub is blocked in a panic-stricken mode.

If you have a blocked drain, it does not just affect your daily life. It also causes issues with using your bath or sink. It could lead to potential problems with your home, like flooding or other structural damage. There are many reasons that you might have a blockage in the drain.

We want to walk you through some common causes and what you can do. Read on so that you won't be caught off guard the next time something looks wrong with your drain!

Foul Odours

When drains smell, it's an indication that the pipes are blocked or plumbing has been installed incorrectly. Bad smells can be a symptom even if there is no water collecting in the drain. Foul smells, damaged floors, walls, and ceilings are caused by seepage. If you notice smells, contact a professional to inspect the area.

Water Backup

If you see a lot of water back up, failing to drain efficiently, in your drains or toilets, it means you likely have a clogged drain or backed-up pipes. Do not let this go on for a long time. It is unsanitary and can make the bathroom floor very slippery.

Stagnant Water

Slow-moving water is the biggest tip-off regarding a blocked drain. A clogged pipe means that the pipe has less space to carry liquid through, which means there's less water rushing along. This leads to water that moves slowly – sometimes so gradually it stops altogether. If this happens, bacteria, fungi, and insects can grow in the stagnant water, making you sick.

So if your drains are moving slowly, or if they've stopped moving at all, call a licensed plumber right away.

Now, Let's look at some of the everyday things that cause drains to clog or backup. It's important to know this information to prevent drainage issues in the future.

Preventing Blocked Drains

Keep an eye out for materials such as hair, grease, and food scraps that get stuck in your pipes. You can use a trap that can catch this before it blocks your pipes. Sometimes these materials can form clumps that block the entire pipe and cause sewage to back up in your home. Minerals may also build in your pipes due to hard water. The mineral build-up isn't a typical issue but it can depend on your water supply.

Beware of Chemicals

Many people may not know the damage that is done by regular harsh chemicals. Don't be fooled by the marketing of those colorful liquids that promise to unclog your drains, over time, using them can cause more harm than good!

The Flushing Mechanism

Last but not least is the flushing mechanism. This is the lever or button you press that lifts the outlet valve so that your toilet will flush.

What can you do?

If you're experiencing drain problems, immediately stop the use of the sink that is blocked. To clear clogged drains, use a plunger. A plunger uses water pressure to force air through a pipe and into the clog, breaking it up to move down the drain.

One home remedy you may have seen to clear up a slow draining sink, especially if you don't have a plunger, is to pour 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1/2 cup vinegar down the drain every 10 minutes or so until the clog clears.

Then run hot water down the drain for several minutes to ensure the chemical reaction is complete before using the sink again. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will cause pressure in the drain pipes, pushing the clog through the pipes. You may have to do this a few times to clear the clog completely. Be sure not to mix the combination with other household cleaners, though, as that can be very toxic.

If you feel that your drain is clogged and you've identified the potential for you to solve it on your own, then try using some of the tips presented here.
